Mobile Communications - Samsung Rolls out 5MP Camera Phone
October 22, 2004
Capitalizing on the popularity of camera phones, Samsung Electronics has unveiled the SCH-S250, the first 5MP (Megapixel) camera in the world. Equipped with a charge-coupled device sensor and high-sensitivity flash, the model is able to produce still pictures at a level of quality similar to those of conventional digital cameras.

The SCH-S250 also comes with 92MB onboard memory that can store video and MP3 music files, and 32MB auxiliary memory for more data. It will carry a price tag of approximately US$800 when it hits the Korean market in October 2004.

The camera phone adopts a module developed jointly by Samsung Electronics and Japan-based Asahi Pentax.

Samsung Electronics is hoping to consolidate its leadership position in the high-end segment of the camera phone market by introducing this 5MP model, which came out only three months after its preceding 3.2MP phone. Other Korean players such Pantech and LG Electronics are also planning to roll out 5MP camera phones soon.
